What can i give my ferret to make him gain weight and make his fur fluffy and soft? my ferret is a bit on the skinny side and i don't know what to give him to make him gain more weight. i see all these other ferrets and they are all nice and fluffy and, well fatter than mine. if anyone can help then please do so. I agree with a couple of the others, a bath every 2-3 days is way too often. It dries out their skin and makes them itch like crazy. Personally, I wouldn't give more than four baths a year - that's more than enough. When it comes to baths, I actually give mine oatmeal soaks. I buy natural colloidal oatmeal (made by Aveeno, found in the bath/beauty aisle of most grocery/supercenter type stores) and add a pack to some warm water. Let your ferret soak for about 10-15 minutes and then dry. The oatmeal is great - it doesn't dry out their skin like regular soap/shampoo (so it can be done more than four times a year, if needed), it's a natural cleanser so it does actually clean them, and my ferrets always feel super soft after their soaks.
To help fatten him up, there's a few things you can try - all meat baby foods, kitten milk replacer (KMR), Oxbow Carnivore Care, Totally Ferret Complete Care, Pingford's Porridge, or organic heavy whipping cream. Usually you need an RX from a vet for the Oxbow CC, but you can buy it here without an RX: http://www.calvetsupply.com/category/s (that link should take you right to the product). I keep the OCC on hand at all times and usually mix it in their "soupies." A couple of mine won't eat it on it's own, so you might want to mix it with some baby food or a high quality canned cat food. If you decide to try the KMR or cream, then you should start out by only giving him a small amount to start and then slowly give him more (too much at first could cause some loose bowels). For the KMR, you can give up to 2 tablespoons twice a day (but again, start with less).
If your ferret recently started losing weight, you might want to have him checked by a vet. There's a lot of illnesses that can cause weight loss, so you'll want to make sure everything is ok (if his weight is the result of a health problem, then it won't matter what you do to try to fatten him up). Recent weight loss could also be a result of the season (they usually slim down and change coats for the summer), but if you're not sure, it's best to have him looked at by a vet.
